What is a Totem?

A totem is a symbolic object that often represents a group, family, or belief. Traditionally, totems have deep roots in various cultures, particularly among Indigenous peoples of North America, where they serve as spiritual symbols, often carved from wood or stone. These totems can depict animals, people, or mythical beings and are often used to tell stories or honor ancestors.

In our Halloween project, we’re creating a fun and colorful totem featuring spooky characters like a pumpkin, Dracula, and Frankenstein, making it a perfect blend of tradition and creativity!

Steps to Create Your Trick or Treat Totem Box:

Red – Fiery Dragon

Origin: Worldwide. In Chinese culture, the dragon symbolizes power, strength, and good luck, often associated with the Emperor and prosperity. In contrast, European dragons are typically seen as guardians of treasure and symbols of chaos or evil, feared for their fiery breath and destructive capabilities.

Orange – Nine-Tailed Fox

Origin: East Asia. The nine-tailed fox, or “Kitsune” in Japan and “Gumiho” in Korea, is a magical creature known for its wisdom and magical abilities.

Yellow – Radiant Phoenix

Origin: Ancient Egypt and Greece. The phoenix symbolizes rebirth and immortality, a creature that rises from its ashes in a burst of flames.

Green – Solitary Ogre

Origin: Europe. Ogres, large and often misunderstood, appear in many European folktales as solitary giants living away from human settlements.

Blue – Serene Mermaid

Origin: Worldwide. Mermaids, half-human, half-fish beings, are present in folklore across various cultures, including Greek, African, and Caribbean tales.

Purple – Mysterious Kraken

Origin: Scandinavia. The kraken is a legendary sea monster from Scandinavian folklore, feared by sailors for its immense size and destructive power.

The Headless Horseman

First up is the Headless Horseman from “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” This spooky spirit is said to roam the woods, searching for his lost head. With his horse by his side, he’s become one of the most iconic ghosts in American folklore.

Casper, the Friendly Ghost

Next, let’s lighten the mood with Casper, the Friendly Ghost. Unlike most spirits, Casper doesn’t want to scare people; he just wants to make friends. His heartwarming story has captured the hearts of people around the world through comics, television, and movies.

The Flying Dutchman

The Flying Dutchman is a ghostly ship said to never be able to make port, doomed to sail the oceans forever. Legend has it that sighting the Dutchman is a bad omen. This tale of the sea has been told by sailors for centuries.

La Llorona

From Latin American folklore comes La Llorona, or “The Weeping Woman.” She’s said to wander near rivers, mourning her children whom she tragically lost. Her story is a cautionary tale about love and loss.

The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall

This famous English ghost is said to haunt Raynham Hall in Norfolk, England. She’s often seen wearing a brown brocade dress, and her appearance in a photograph taken in 1936 has made her one of the most famous ghostly images in the world.

How to Draw a Pop-Up Ghost

Let’s add a fun twist to our ghostly friends by learning how to draw a pop-up ghost! Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to draw a ghost – it’s all about letting your imagination float free like a ghostly spirit in the night!

Love potions have been around in stories for centuries. In history, people believed certain mixtures could make someone fall in love. These potions pop up in famous stories like Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and in many movies we love today.

How to Draw a love Potion

Now, let’s get creative and draw our very own love potion! Grab your pencils and colours because we are about to draw a magical potion bottle.

Crafting Your Homemade Love Potion

Time to make some magic in the kitchen! Here’s a fun and easy ‘love potion’ recipe you can try at home. Remember, this potion is all about fun and creativity, not real magic!

Ingredients:

• Milk
• Strawberry Juice
• Sparkling Water
• Glitter (if you have)
• A Glass Jar
• A Spoon to Stir
• Stickers and Labels for Decoration

Instructions:

1. Fill the jar with a third of milk and then fill the rest with strawberry juice, leaving some space at the top for the sparkling water.
2. Add a splash of sparkling water to give it a fizzy touch.
3. If you have glitter, sprinkle a little in to make your potion sparkle.
4. Use the spoon to gently stir your magical concoction.
5. Decorate your jar with stickers or create your own label to give it that authentic potion look.

Mother Shipton is a famous witch from English history. She’s known for her prophecies in the 16th century. The Evil Queen

In “Snow White,” the Evil Queen is a classic example of a fairy tale witch. Her jealousy of Snow White’s beauty leads her to dark magic. The Evil Queen, with her magical mirror and poisoned apple, reminds us that true beauty comes from within and that jealousy can blind us to what really matters.

Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West

From the novel “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire, Elphaba is a complex character who challenges our perceptions of good and evil. This reimagining of the Wicked Witch of the West explores her backstory, revealing a misunderstood character with a strong sense of justice. Elphaba’s journey teaches us about the dangers of prejudice and the importance of understanding different perspectives.

The Ice Queen

The Ice Queen, from Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, is a mysterious and powerful figure who reigns over snow and ice. In Britain, black cats are considered lucky! People believe that if a black cat crosses your path, good things will happen.

A Witch’s Companion

In some old tales, black cats are often seen with witches. They were thought to be the witches’ special friends or even magical creatures that could help with spells.

The Egyptian Goddess

In ancient Egypt, cats, especially black ones, were so loved that they were protected by law. They were connected to Bastet, the cat goddess, who was a symbol of protection and good fortune.

Sailors’ Sea Buddies

Sailors used to take black cats on ships for good luck. They also thought these cats would protect them from storms at sea.

In ancient Greece, people believed the moon was a beautiful goddess named Selene. They imagined her riding across the night sky in a glowing chariot, pulled by white horses. They thought Selene’s light was her way of smiling down at them from the sky.

Native American Moon Names

Many Native American tribes named each full moon to match what was happening in nature. For instance, they called the full moon in June the ‘Strawberry Moon’ because that was the time to pick ripe strawberries. These names helped them keep track of time and seasons.

Chang’e, the Moon Goddess of China

In China, there’s a famous story about a goddess named Chang’e who lives on the moon. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, people celebrate Chang’e by looking at the moon and eating mooncakes. They believe the full moon is a symbol of family and togetherness.

Tsuki-no-Usagi, the Moon Rabbit of Japan

In Japan, there’s a tale about a rabbit that lives on the moon, known as Tsuki-no-Usagi. People say that if you look closely at the full moon, you might see the rabbit making mochi, which is a special type of rice cake. It’s a fun game to try and spot the rabbit in the moon!

Máni, the Moon Chased by a Wolf in Norse Mythology

In the stories from the Vikings, the moon, called Máni, is always being chased across the sky by a wolf. The full moon is when Máni has managed to escape the wolf, shining brightly in relief and victory.

African Myths: The Moon and Rain

In some African stories, the moon is seen as a gentle and kind god who controls the rain. A bright full moon is a good sign, indicating that there will be plenty of rain for the crops and animals.

Werewolves (Europe and North America)

In many stories, especially from Europe, there’s a creature called a werewolf. People believed that during a full moon, some humans could transform into these creatures – part wolf and part human. Werewolves were thought to be very strong and powerful, and they would only turn back into humans when the full moon was over. This legend was used to explain why wolves were more active and could be heard howling during the full moon.

The Moon Rabbit (Asia)

In countries like China, Japan, and Korea, there’s a legend about a rabbit that lives on the moon, known as the Moon Rabbit or Jade Rabbit. The story says that this rabbit makes medicine or pounds mochi (a type of rice cake) on the moon. When you look at the full moon, some people say you can see the shape of a rabbit, which is how this legend began.

Chonchon (South America)

In South American folklore, especially in Chile, there’s a story about a creature called the Chonchon. People believed that certain sorcerers could turn themselves into these flying creatures that looked like heads with big ears. According to the legend, they would fly around under the light of the full moon, causing mischief.

Bakunawa (Philippines)

In the Philippines, there’s a legend about a dragon-like creature called Bakunawa. It was believed that this creature could swallow the moon, causing eclipses. During a full moon, people would bang pots and make noise to scare the Bakunawa away and prevent it from eating the moon.

Selkies (Scottish and Irish Folklore)

Selkies are magical creatures from Scottish and Irish stories. They are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become humans on land. According to the legends, selkies could change their form during the full moon and often had secret lives that humans knew little about.
